Tom Thomson with Bob & Diana McElroy

August 16

The McElroys have spent several years searching for the locations of Tom Thomson’s paintings from the summer of 1916, when he worked as a fire ranger based at Achray. They will describe some of their explorations and show comparisons of Thomson’s work with the present day landscape. Despite Thomson’s limited painting time that summer, due to his fire ranger duties, he was still able to produce a large number of field sketches. Some of these were the basis for studio paintings done during the following winter, including ‘The Jack Pine’ and possibly ‘The West Wind’. This presentation happens at the Achray Theatre located in the Achray Campground.
