As a past canoe trip guide in Algonquin Park and a staff alumnus at Algonquin Outfitters, I think I can confidently say I know my way around Algonquin. But when I joined Explorers’ Edge and learned more about what this fantastic region has to offer, I came to the conclusion that I still have lots to discover about canoe tripping spots in my own backyard.
So I’m determined to head out this summer and explore more – and my first trip will be to check out the Pickerel River system that crosses beautiful Loring-Restoule (in between Algonquin Park and Parry Sound).
The Great Pickerel River Expedition of 2013!
I have lived in the Explorers’ Edge region of Ontario for over a decade now and I can’t believe I haven’t discovered Loring-Restoule area before now. To the north is the French River, to the west is Grundy Lake Provincial Park, Noganosh Lake Provincial Park, and more east is Restoule Provincial Park. Right in the middle of the action is Port Loring and the Pickerel River – a paddler’s dream spot.
Loring-Restoule is a nature lover’s paradise as well, dotted with countless opportunities for discovery: hiking, biking, ATV-ing, snowmobiling and Nordic skiing trails. There are resorts, lodges, campgrounds, B&Bs, cottage rentals and even outdoor activity camps to stay at. And researching the area online reveals that this is also a hot spot for recreational fishing!
So my interest is peaked, I’ve spoken to many folks in the region about all it has to offer, and I’m off in mid-July to canoe the Pickerel River system and to discover everything Loring-Restoule has to offer. I’ll post about my planning, I’ll post during my visit, and I’ll let you know I made it back with another blog edition to help you plan your own adventure in this beautiful Ontario vacation spot.
More to come on the Great Pickerel River Expedition of 2013!
