2019 Parry Sound Girlfriends’ Weekend: More Fun Than Ever On Georgian Bay!

Gather up your girlfriends for that long-overdue weekend getaway of self-care, shopping and fun on November 22-24, 2019 in beautiful Parry Sound – hosted by the Downtown Business Association.

Register for FREE here to attend the Welcome Party and receive a complimentary shopping bag. The first 150 registrants also receive $10 ‘downtown dollars’ to spend in any downtown store. Shops are open late Friday evening and will be offering special deals. Bring your receipts back to Pardon My Garden (35 Seguin St) before 9:30pm to receive ballots to enter draws for fabulous prizes!

FRIDAY NIGHT

Welcome Party
The weekend kicks off from 4-9pm at Pardon My Garden on Friday, November 22nd. Enjoy live music performances by Billy Mack while you savour delicious appetizers, as well as wonderful wine and beer samplings.

Before you head to the Welcome Party, be sure to check-in for the entire event in the lobby of the Beatty Building (26 James St) between 4-7pm to grab your free, reusable shopping bag. If you’re one of the first 150 participants who pre-registered, you can also pick up your complimentary $10 downtown dollars to get your shopping started.

Axe Throwing
Head over to James Street near the Mary Street intersection from 4:30-8:30pm to challenge your friends in a friendly axe-throwing competition! SPACE IS LIMITED! Buy your tickets here. Shopping
After indulging your taste buds at the Welcome Party, hit the streets for some evening shopping. Downtown stores are staying open until 9pm with special deals for you and your girlfriends.

Keep your receipts and return to Pardon My Garden before 9:30pm to submit them for your CHANCE TO WIN AMAZING DOOR PRIZES! For every $20 you spend at downtown merchants, you receive one ballot entered into the door prize draw. Prizes will be drawn at 10pm and posted on the Parry Sound Downtown Business Association (DBA) Facebook page.

8am: Yoga & Breakfast (1 hour)
Begin your day with some gentle moderate yoga. Join yoga instructor Ellen Koennecke for a one-hour yoga class followed by a delicious breakfast.

9am: Boot Camp Class (1 hour)
Are you ready to work up a sweat? Join Jacklyn Frias for a circuit style, one-hour full body workout, touching on all the main muscle groups. Get in your cardio, strength and mobility exercises for the weekend. All equipment provided. Wear workout clothing and bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated (Ages 16+).

9:30am: Medicine Bag Workshop (2 ½ hours)
You will be working with deer hide to make an Indigenous medicine pouch! Tracy Pawis from the G’zaagin Art Gallery will teach you how to use various tools to cut the leather, sew with a needle and thread, punch holes with a hole puncher and decorate the pouch with coloured beads. You will come away with an understanding of what a medicine pouch is used for by Indigenous cultures (Ages 12+).

9:30am: Epoxy Filled Charcuterie Board or Tray (2 hours + 1 hour)
Part 1 (2 hours) involves choosing your one of a kind piece of wood, your colour of epoxy, and pouring it into the mold to create your own masterpiece. If you wish, bring your own pebbles, leaves, pine cones, shells, etc. to add to the epoxy. You will tend to the pour using torches to remove any bubbles that form.

Part 2 (1 hour) begins with sanding the board into the finished product and then coating it with food-grade oil. Handles can be purchased if you wish to make a tray.

Workshops can be messy so please dress accordingly. (Ages 16+) *This is a two-part workshop. The second session is approximately 1-hour long and will be completed one evening the following week (November 25-28th).

10am: Yoga, Flow & Stretch (1 hour)
Join Patricia Fell for a half hour of warming, Vinyasa style flow to fire up and energize your body, followed by 1/2-hour of slower deeper stretches to leave you feeling loose, limber and happy. Bring your own yoga mat or use one provided (Ages 16+).

10am: Soap Making Workshop (2 ½ hours)
Katy Ward from Middle River Farms will teach you how to make an old-fashioned, sustainable soap using lard, essential oils and natural plant colourants. You will receive recipes and take home four bars of soap in two delightful fragrances.

Relax with a cup of tea while discovering a piece of yourself. Reader Amy Marcon will give each person a private 10-minute Tarot card reading – who knows what you and your girlfriends will find out!

Holiday Planter Workshop (30 minutes)
Pick from the following times: 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, or 1:30 pm
Create your own holiday planter with a mix of fresh winter greens, berries and your favourite ribbon to complement your home’s décor perfectly. Created in a reusable container that fits outdoor planters or looks great on its own, this planter is a great way to welcome guests to your home this holiday season. Bring your own gloves because the sap can be quite sticky. Upgraded ribbon selections, berries, pine cones, ornaments, etc. are available in the store for an additional cost. (Children must be accompanied by an adult.)

11am: Live Your Ideal Life — Empower Yourself! (1 hour)

1pm: Painted Tree or Leaf Ornament or Coaster (3 hours)
Learn how to paint Myrhanda McKay’s signature maples leaves or birch trees onto two Birch/Maple ornaments (or you can turn them into coasters). Take them home and give them as a gift or keep them for yourself. (Bring an old shirt or apron as you will be working with oil paints.)

1pm: Quilled Earrings Workshop (3 hours)
Tracy Pawis from the G’zaagin Art Gallery will walk you through the steps in making a pair of quilted earrings. During this workshop, you will be using materials that include birch bark, porcupine quills, sinew, and jewelry accessories. You will learn how materials are selected, cleaned, dried and stored in this traditional Indigenous craft work. (Ages 12+)

1pm: Dehydrating Meals for Back-Country Camping (2 hours)
This workshop will help you up your ante on back-country meals. Participants will learn about basic food dehydrating techniques and watch at least four kinds of dehydrators in action. There are so many nutritious and delicious gourmet meals that are light-weight, compact, and easily reheated to learn about, which will help you save on fuel. Sample some favourites such as pulled pork burritos, candied bacon, and quinoa salad. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks will be covered in this workshop. The same techniques can be applied to household meals and snacks. Learn how to use the 50% off rack at your local grocery store to your advantage!

2pm: Cross Country Ski Equipment & Waxing 101 (2 hours)
Join Aleesha Clark from Parry Sound Bikes for an overview of cross-country ski equipment options and styles, and learn how to fit and size skis. Learn how to wax Nordic skis with a hands-on chance to practice on your own skis for the upcoming season (feel free to bring them along).

4pm: Painting Class with Lady Babs (2 hours)
Many, many years ago, Lady Babs had an affair with Pablo Picasso. Picasso wanted to paint her in the nude, but she said NO, so he painted her dress that is now said to be worth an estimated $7 million. Join Lady Babs for a painting class. She will walk you through the steps to paint a vase full of beautiful flowers. Leave with a beautiful 8” x 10” painting. Libations may be served to those who behave. Bring an old shirt or apron to protect your clothes from paint. (Ages 19+)
