There is a way to make a Mother’s Day bouquet even more spectacular: send the gift of a getaway to Ontario’s cottage country along with it. Here are 7 experiences to include with your flowers for Mom (…or Grandma, or Aunt Sarah, or the woman who has always been like a mother to you…) this year.
1. Spas in Spring
A spa getaway is an obvious choice of gift for Mom, but the beauty of these indulgent escapes is that they’re always welcomed. From facials to mani-pedis, from massages to custom treatments, a vacation at a spa will renew and reinvigorate her for more mothering to come. Perfect for the Mom who likes to try new experiences, an “edu-trip” will combine her love of learning with some much needed alone-time. The best part is there are countless ideas for you to consider when choosing the perfect gift for her.
Has she always wanted to go sea kayaking? Sign her up with White Squall Paddling Centre or the Ontario Sea Kayak Centre, both located in Parry Sound and both of which provide instruction and have guided-theme weekends too. Canoeing more her thing? Plenty of outfitters and guides will help her find serenity in a boat on these sparkling blue waters.
Does she dabble in photography? Sign her up for one of the photography workshops happening throughout the region this year with some of the best wilderness photographers in the nation.
Does she like to let her wild side loose on vacation? Sign her up for ATV touring for an adrenaline fix on the Canadian Shield she won’t soon forget, where mud and giggles are guaranteed to fly.
Is your Mom more of a culinary type? Book a tour at one of the fantastic craft breweries in the region or sign her up for the Bog-To-Bottle Signature Experience at Muskoka Lakes Winery in Bala. (And watch for Mother’s Day Brunch specials at incredible dining establishments located here.)

3. Endurance Mom
Let’s face it – most Moms have more stamina than you can shake a baby rattle at. But if she’s a little more hardcore-athletic-type, why not pay her registration and accommodation for one of many endurance and recreational participation events happening in 2018.
From short course triathlons at The TriMuskokan in June to the Ironman Muskoka in July, from the Spin The Lakes spring cycling event in May to the final year of the Pedaling for Parkinson’s multi-route weekend in July. Tons of fun runs too, like the popular Band on the Run. Go Mom Go!
4. Take a Cruise for Views
There is something very serene and charming about climbing aboard one of the many day-trip touring vessels you’ll find in Ontario’s cottage country. Sit back and enjoy the view of cottage country’s renowned natural landscapes from the perspective that only comes from floating on the sparkling blue waters found here.
Most Captains throw in some informative commentary too, making this getaway gift an edu-trip combo. (Note that cruise season in these parts gets going closer to the May long weekend, so book her tickets and accommodation in advance.) For more info on cool cruises, click here.
Ladies who golf – we know they’re out there. If your Mom is one of them, then a golf getaway to cottage country is sure to please. Check out over 30 exceptional courses in the region and great package deals as well on the helpful Golf Muskoka website. Book her tee times in advance too!
If you want to make a day out of it, there is also a Mother’s Day brunch being offered at a number of courses across the region, including at South Muskoka Curling & Golf Club, Taboo Muskoka, Oak Bay Golf Club, Seguin Valley Golf Club and The Ridge at Manitou.
6. Music & Entertainment
Put some music in her heart with a concert getaway!.
Is Mom an ABBA fan? Be sure to get her tickets to the Gravenhurst Opera House for the ABBA Magic tribute show on May 12. Or if you’re looking for a laugh with Mom, check out Suddenly Mommy on May 5 – a hilarious one-woman show that takes us through every mom’s experience of good times, bad advice and trying to do it all.
Does she like more original rock ‘n’ roll or Motown? Get her tickets for the Legends Show at the Stockey Centre in Parry Sound May 12, a concert by Paquette Productions with tributes to Roy Orbison, Connie Francis, Motown, and Elvis.
Is she a theatre fan with a sassy sense of humour? The Huntsville Theatre Company presents Sex Please We’re Sixty at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area with six shows running May 17-20. Promising laughter and tears, this show is a hilarious and fast-paced farce of charming, vivacious, and funny explorations into the libidos and trysts of men and women over a certain age who are still trying to prove they have it what it takes to be–ahem—amorous!
7. Rest & Relax in the great Canadian wilderness just north of Toronto
Quite possibly the best gift you can give your Mom – a getaway where she can do absolutely nothing. Includes restful accommodations, stunning surroundings with woods and water, sleeping in or staying up late, and indulging in great food and drinks.
This Mother’s Day, by all means send her a beautiful bouquet. But make it extra special by including a getaway with an amazing experience in Algonquin Park, the Almaguin Highlands, Loring-Restoule, Muskoka and Parry Sound, Ontario.
