For over 30 years, some of the world’s most renowned classical music artists have gathered in Parry Sound for an annual summer event that has no equal in Canada. Under the direction of artistic director James Campbell, the Festival of the Sound has presented in this hockey-est of Canadian hockey towns an array of outstanding musicians, including James Ehnes, Russell Braun, Jamie Sommerville, Anton Kuerti (founding artistic director), Moshe Hammer, Jan Lisieski (who started early at the festival as an RBC Stockey Young Artist) and many, many more.
For three weeks throughout July and August, the Festival of the Sound takes over the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts in Parry Sound for a variety of morning, noon, afternoon and evening performances. (Most notably in the evening, intermissions are timed so patrons can head out to the patio to enjoy the sunset on Georgian Bay.)
A jazz weekend is inserted to mellow things out and includes such great performers as Peter Appleyard or the Toronto All-Star Big Band, and themed cruises are conducted on Parry Sound’s favourite boat, the Island Queen.
