2SLGBTQ+ Inclusion
Fostering an inclusive tourism environment for 2SLGBTQ+ travelers and workers isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s also a smart strategy for sustainable growth. Globally, LGBTQ+ travelers already generate an economic impact of $4.7 trillion and consistently outspend other segments. In Canada alone, this market represents a $12?billion annual opportunity for tourism, and 90% of LGBTQ+ visitors say a destination’s inclusive reputation influences their decision to visit. Explorers’ Edge recognizes that embracing diversity makes our rural region more welcoming for all and more resilient through market fluctuations. Our mandate is to ensure everyone feels safe and celebrated in “The Great Canadian Wilderness.”
- Diversity Training: We have partnered with Canada’s LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce to deliver workshops that help tourism businesses understand and implement 2SLGBTQ+ inclusive practices. These sessions cover terminology, customer service scenarios, and workplace inclusion, equipping operators to effectively welcome LGBTQ+ customers and employees.
- Inclusive Market Development: Explorers’ Edge hosts educational events highlighting the importance and potential of the LGBTQ+ travel market. In October 2025 we presented the “Diva Dialogues” summit – a business case forum showcasing how embracing 2SLGBTQI+ travelers can drive long-term success. Attendees learned that LGBTQ+ tourists seek authentic, safe experiences and tend to rebound faster after industry shocks, underscoring the value of genuinely welcoming destinations
- Rainbow Registered Program: To tangibly boost regional inclusivity, Explorers’ Edge facilitated 30 complimentary Rainbow Registered certifications for local tourism businesses in partnership with FedNor and Canada’s LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce . In Fall 2025, we also began the process of becoming Rainbow Registered as an organization ourselves, signaling our internal commitment to inclusive workplace practices and community accountability. This step reflects our belief that welcoming destinations begin with welcoming teams – and it underscores our role as leaders in building safer, more inclusive rural tourism.
- Destination Audit: In Fall 2025, Explorers’ Edge not only began the process of becoming Rainbow Registered as an organization, but also initiated a formal 2SLGBTQIA+ destination audit in partnership with Canada’s LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC). This in-depth process includes stakeholder outreach across the region, from Muskoka to Almaguin Highlands to Parry Sound, to better understand the lived experiences of queer residents, tourism workers, and visitors. The audit will identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities to make our destination more inclusive, with input gathered through structured interviews, a stakeholder call, and follow-up surveys. It’s an honest, community-rooted step toward creating a region that actively welcomes and supports 2SLGBTQIA+ people, not just in marketing, but in practice.
