Partner Spotlight – Hope Arises Wiigwaasi Jiimaanke

More Than a Canoe: A Journey of Culture, Connection and Reconciliation

Through support from the Explorers’ Edge Partnership Fund, Indigenous-led Hope Arises Project Inc. brought an extraordinary cultural experience to downtown Huntsville with Wiigwaasi Jiimaanke, a traditional birchbark canoe build celebrating Indigenous knowledge, craftsmanship and community connection.

From September 28 to October 9, 2026, River Mill Park became a gathering place for students, residents and visitors to experience the traditional art of canoe building. Led by master canoe builder Chuck Commanda, alongside assistant Amberly Quakegesic, the initiative offered a unique opportunity to learn about the cultural and spiritual significance of the birchbark canoe.

Four educational teaching lodges, organized around the Medicine Wheel, introduced participants to Anishinaabe teachings, traditional knowledge and the importance of the canoe in Indigenous history. The initiative also complemented Huntsville’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation commemorations, creating meaningful opportunities for learning, reflection and connection.

The experience attracted significant community interest, with local media reporting hundreds of visitors during the first week alone. The two-week journey culminated in the planned ceremonial birthing of the canoe into the Muskoka River on October 9.

The partnership also supported opportunities for experiential tourism, including a two-day cultural experience connecting the Misko-Aki exhibition in Gravenhurst with the canoe build in Huntsville, demonstrating the potential for Indigenous-led tourism experiences across the region.

Beyond the event itself, this partnership represents a lasting commitment to preserving and sharing traditional knowledge, strengthening relationships and supporting Indigenous-led cultural tourism.

For Explorers’ Edge, Wiigwaasi Jiimaanke was more than a canoe build. It was a powerful celebration of culture, community and reconciliation, demonstrating the lasting impact of partnerships built on respect, learning and shared purpose.
