Analysis of Ontario’s Regional Tourism Organizations (RTOs)
Executive Summary: Analysis of Ontario’s Regional Tourism Organizations (RTOs)
Prepared by Kuration on behalf of Explorers’ Edge – April 2025
This comprehensive report examines the performance, planning, and promotional strategies of Ontario’s 13 Regional Tourism Organizations (RTOs), with a particular focus on 2022 data.
Key findings highlight an inverse relationship between visitation and yield—regions with fewer visitors, like RTO 12 (Explorers’ Edge) and RTO 13, showed significantly higher per-visitor spending. In fact, our region boasted the highest average spend per visitor at $300, with longer stays and strong engagement in outdoor activities. Seasonality remains a factor, with over half of all visits to our region occurring in Q3 (July–September).
The report also reviews business plans and marketing efforts across the province. While themes of sustainability, inclusivity, and community alignment are common, the approach and effectiveness of each RTO vary. Advertising efforts range from influencer-driven content to culinary trails and strategic destination branding.
This analysis provides valuable context as Ontario’s tourism landscape continues to evolve—highlighting performance disparities, strategic gaps, and opportunities for coordinated impact across the sector.
