Position Summary:
Reporting to the Golf Course Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent aids in all aspects of golf course maintenance and agronomic practices, ensuring a high-quality playing surface and an aesthetically pleasing environment. This role involves planning and executing practices in alignment with the Freed Hotels & Resorts golf maintenance programs. This position is responsible for assisting the Golf Course Superintendent in overseeing day-to-day operations, managing the grounds maintenance team, Horticulturalist, and delivering exceptional playing conditions for members and guests.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated comprehension and experience with golf course maintenance operations, construction, cultural practices, payroll and procurement experience, strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Grounds Maintenance Operations:
- Assist the Superintendent in planning and executing daily maintenance schedules for the golf course and resort grounds.
- Supervise the day-to-day operations and task lists for mowing, aeration, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and other turf management practices.
- Liase with the Superintendent to conduct routine inspections to ensure the course and grounds meet resort standards.
- Liase with homeowners, property managers, and third party vendors for all grounds maintenance and recreation maintenance related projects and tasks
- Participate on the snow removal and trail maintenance team as a working team member
Team Leadership:
- Work in conjunction with the Superintendent on the recruitment and retention of all Golf and Grounds maintenance staff
- Manage, train, and mentor the grounds maintenance team to foster a positive and productive work environment.
- Work in conjunction with the Superintendent on corrective action and positive development opportunities for staff
- Responsible for timely completion of time and attendance processing and required HR paperwork for employee processing
- Schedule and assign tasks to ensure efficient use of resources.
- Monitor team performance and address any concerns promptly.
Irrigation and Equipment Management:
- Oversee the maintenance and operation of the resort’s irrigation systems.
- Ensure proper care, maintenance, and repair of equipment in coordination with the equipment manager.
Turf Health and Agronomic Programs:
- Assist in developing and implementing agronomic plans to maintain healthy turfgrass.
- Monitor weather conditions and adjust maintenance practices accordingly.
- Keep detailed records of applications and turf health data.
Budget and Inventory Management:
- Responsible for the procurement and PO submission process for all grounds maintenance related items
- Help manage the maintenance budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, placing orders as needed.
- Assist in the capital and budget planning for Grounds
Safety and Compliance:
- Act as a contributing leader on the Joint Health and Safety committee
- Promote a culture of safety by ensuring team members follow proper procedures and use PPE.
- Stay informed of and complies with local, provincial, and federal regulations related to environmental practices and workplace safety.

Education & Experience:
- Certificate or diploma in Agronomy, Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, or a related field.
- Maintain a valid Ontario Pesticide application license, IPM certification, Chainsaw Operator Certification and a valid Ontario driver’s license.
- Knowledge of current provincial laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations, including employment, safety, and environmental standards, laws, and regulations.
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience of golf course maintenance operations in a leadership capacity.
- Knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods; and an understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.
