The Friends of Algonquin Park is seeking a qualified individual to work as Collections Assistant with the Algonquin Provincial Park Archives and Collections (APPAC), located in Algonquin Park.
Employment is from May to August, 2025, with a possibility of extension.
Duties
- Digitize, catalogue, and document artifacts, photographs, and archival records, entering each item into the Past Perfect database with public online access.
- Clean, label, organize, catalogue, and properly house new donations for storage.
- Prepare and deliver interpretive programs to Park visitors about the Archives and its collections.
- Respond to natural and cultural heritage inquiries from members of the public.
- Assist senior collections staff with day-to-day responsibilities and new projects including potential donations, research visits, inventories, pest & environmental management, and library management.
- Assist senior collections staff with displays, interpretive events, and activities for Park visitors (eg. Loggers Day, Meet the Researcher Day).
Qualifications
- Current student or recent graduate of a university or college program in Museum Studies, Archives, or a related field (eg. History, Photography, Archaeology, Anthropology); recent high school graduates exploring this education are also encouraged to apply; relevant employment and volunteer experiences considered assets.
- Experience with databases; knowledge of PastPerfect considered an asset.
- Strong attention to detail and focus during repetitive tasks.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills; knowledge of Mac computer applications considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Ontario’s natural and cultural history.
- Knowledge of Algonquin Park.
- A valid MTO Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
Work Location
- This in-office position will be based out of the Algonquin Park Visitor Centre.
Remuneration and Duration
- Employment is from May to August, 2025, with a possibility of extension.
- The rate of pay is $18.00 per hour based on 40 hours per week, working weekdays and some weekends as per schedule.
- Staff house accommodations may be available to qualified candidates.
